Zoe Zebra - 2 Layer Print

Zoe Zebra was one of the first two-layer stencils in the nucaneca range — and when it arrived, it intimidated a fair number of hobby printers. The level of detail is immediately visible, and a stencil with that much going on raises reasonable questions about how workable it actually is. The layout has no loose parts, which keeps the stencil handling straightforward, and Zoe was also the first design where a registration system was introduced to make layer alignment easier — something that changes the experience considerably.

Before you start

Because of its intricate details — fine lines, small dots, tight curves — cut the stencil at a minimum height of 19 cm. Below that size, the finest elements either become too thin to survive cutting without tearing, or the holes close up enough that ink cannot pass through cleanly. At 19 cm, the design works comfortably with an A4 screen and A4 stencil paper, with enough margin to move the squeegee without crowding the edges.

The file set

The download includes two versions of the stencil: one with alignment guides and one without.

With alignment guides — each layer includes two small open registration squares positioned outside the main design. These are printed with the base layer and used to position the second layer precisely once the first is dry. The tolerance is forgiving: 2–3 millimetres of drift won't ruin the result.

Without alignment guides — align the second layer so the black sits neatly on or within the white outline. Zoe's jaw and neck provide enough visual anchoring to position by eye with confidence.

If you're using the version with alignment guides, the registration method works as follows. Before any colour goes down, place strips of masking tape directly beneath each registration square on your print surface, covering the open squares completely so that no ink reaches the fabric or paper underneath. Position the tape precisely — it needs to sit under the marks without overlapping into the actual design area. When printing the first layer, flood and print over the registration squares as normal; the ink goes onto the tape, not the surface beneath. Once the first layer is fully dry, position the second layer stencil so its registration squares align exactly with the tape marks. The tape stays in place and acts as your reference point throughout.

One practical note: this method works best on the first print of a session. Once ink has passed through the mesh repeatedly, the mesh becomes less transparent, and seeing through to align the registration squares precisely gets harder. If you're printing the same design on multiple garments in a row, factor in that registration becomes more demanding from the second print onwards.

Placement

Zoe is designed to sit at the lower edge or corner of the garment — peeking into the frame rather than centred on it. On T-shirts and sweaters, this means positioning the stencil just at the seam allowance before the garment is sewn, so the finished print lands cleanly once the seam is closed. The placement feels unconventional until the print is done, at which point it tends to look exactly right.

Test the position with masking tape before printing — it takes very little time and removes the main source of uncertainty on the first attempt. The edge composition also works beyond fabric: because the design enters from a corner rather than sitting centred, it translates naturally into a framed context and could work equally well printed on paper as part of a collage or as a standalone piece.

Printing a two-layer design

The two real challenges with a two-layer print are drying time and placement — everything else follows the same logic as a single-layer print.

The base layer needs to be fully dry before the second goes down. A standard hair dryer works well; once you've dried the layer, test it lightly with your fingers. If it still feels moist or sticky, dry it for longer. Printing onto an underdried base risks the second layer adhering to the first, which makes lifting the screen off cleanly considerably harder. If you're printing several pieces in a row, that risk compounds — ink can start to build up on the screen itself over multiple rounds.

One counterintuitive point: the very first print of a session is the easiest for placement. The screen is clean and transparent, the stencil positions without interference, and you have full visibility for the registration step. From the second print onwards you're working with ink in the mesh — manageable, but worth knowing going in.

On colour: the classic combination is a white base with a black second layer, and the contrast makes the detail read sharply. If you want to explore other combinations, a lighter base paired with a noticeably darker second layer gives the design the separation it needs to work. The first attempt teaches you the process; by the second or third, the technique feels familiar and the result starts to feel reliable.

Because of the scale and the detail, lifting the screen off a finished Zoe Zebra print produces a specific kind of satisfaction — the sort that's hard to anticipate until you've done it.
