DIY Pennant Chain – A Fun and Customizable Craft Project
Elevate your events or add a creative touch to your kids' room with this beautiful pennant chain! Inspired by “mini Schultüten,” this project combines style and personalization. The included stencil/cut file makes it easy to screenprint your designs, while the built-in seam allowance ensures quick and precise results. Here's how to create your own pennant chain:
What You’ll Need:
-
- Fabric (sturdy materials like old tablecloths work well)
- Bias tape
- Cutting machine or precision cutting tools
- A5 or A4 screen, squeegee, spatula, and tape
- Screenprinting colors of your choice
- Sewing machine
- Iron
Step-by-Step Instructions
Prepare Your Stencils:
Print as many stencils as needed. Each pennant requires two identical pattern pieces. You can print the same design on both sides or mix and match colors, patterns, or even fabrics.
Customize Your Sizes:
The final pennant height is approximately 13 cm.
Adjust the size if needed, but remember to maintain a 1 cm seam allowance. The designs have been optimized for the default size and may not be suitable for significant downsizing due to some of the more intricate details of the stencils.
Screenprint Your Designs
Fit one stencil into an A5 screen or two into an A4 screen (when the recommended size is maintained)
Print and heat-fix your pennants for vibrant, long-lasting results.

Cut along the seam allowance:

Place two pieces right sides together and sew along the sides and bottom, leaving the top open.

Carefully trim the corners for clean edges, taking care not to cut into the seam.

Turn and Press
Turn the pennant right side out and press with an iron for a polished finish. Do not forget to cut off any seam allowance that exceeds the top line of the pennant.

Attach to Bias Tape
Measure the desired length of your bias tape, accounting for the number of pennants and spacing. Then, arrange the pennants in your preferred order. Sew the pennants to the tape along the top edge.

Finish the Bias Tape
Fold over the tape and sew again along its full length to secure the pennants.
Hang the new pennant chain and enjoy the view!
