Create a Handmade Envelope for Your Message: A Personal Touch in Minutes

Want to add a unique, personal touch to your correspondence? Skip the trip to the store and craft your own envelope at home with just a sheet of paper. This simple guide shows you how to fold a message-ready envelope that’s perfect for letters, cards, or notes. Not only is it practical, but it also makes your message feel extra special. Whether you’re looking to surprise a loved one or simply get creative, this step-by-step tutorial ensures you can send your message in style without any hassle.

Instructions

Place a rectangular sheet of paper on a flat surface, oriented lengthwise (landscape-style). You can use various paper sizes, but standard dimensions (A 4 ir 8.5 x 11 inches) are a reliable option.

If you want an easy "guide" for the following steps, fold the paper in half lengthwise, aligning the edges to create a straight fold. Press along the folded edge with your fingers to make a crease. Once done, unfold the paper to reveal the crease in the center.

Next, fold the top right corner down so that its edge lines up with the center crease, forming a triangle shape. Ensure the fold is smooth and neat. Repeat this step with the top left corner, folding it down to create a second triangle. At this stage, there should be two triangles positioned on top of a rectangular base.

Fold about one centimeter of the left and right edges inward toward the center crease. The exact measurement doesn't need to be precise—simply approximate one centimeter. These folds should leave a space in the center where a note or card can fit.

Keep the paper positioned with the triangular point facing upwards. Fold the bottom edge of the paper toward the base of the triangle. This fold should align the edge of the folded triangle. Smooth the fold with your fingers and then unfold it. I like to apply glue on the folded edge here. An alternative is to tape the edges outside with washi tape.

Fold your message so that it fits snugly inside the envelope. Place the folded message in the central area, between the horizontal creases. Use the flaps created earlier—both the triangle and the side folds—to hold the message in place.

To close the envelope, do not forget to seal the flap.

If you choose to mail the envelope, keep in mind that postal services may charge extra for items that do not conform to standard rectangular shapes or have irregular edges. To avoid additional charges, consider delivering the envelope in person.

And guess what...

The bonus wrapping paper that comes with the gift bag bundles is a perfect fit! I have used an A4 page split into quarters (equal to A6 size) for the small size that is a nice fit to be attached to the gift bags.

When using a uni-directional pattern, do not forget to turn the page upside down when folding.
